CBD trends and developments explained

2021 promises a new era for CBD. Here’s a rundown of the hottest CBD trends to look out for in 2021.

Experts suggest that the market growth of the therapeutic compound is speculated to soar new heights. This is largely owing to the vast range of cannabidiol products flooding pharmacies and online stores.

Despite a COVID-19 stricken 2020, the compound continues to be made the flagship ingredient of a whole host of products, from creams and lotions to teas and chocolates.

It won’t be long before CBD becomes an essential household item.

CBD Skincare products: An uprising trend!

A report from a reputable source — Prohibition Partners — indicates that the CBD skincare market will clench almost $1 billion in sales by 2025.

The Cannabis Intelligence Company suggests that this because of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the compound, which are taking traditional beauty products to the knockers. Consumer attitudes are also changing. More and more people are interested in buying natural cosmetic products rather than their chemical counterparts.

Whether or not this trend continues on its upward trajectory will depend on the fate of cannabidiol. CBD science is still in its early stage.

Right now, we don’t have conclusive evidence to suggest that cannabidiol helps improve skin health. Most CBD studies are preclinical i.e. based on animal models, and therefore require human translation.

That said, existing evidence is promising and there’s a huge possibility that cannabis may cause a massive shift in the skin and beauty industry in the next two decades.

Transdermal products

There two types of trending CBD skincare products: transdermal and topical.

Topical products are less bioavailable. Meaning, they are only good for localized treatments. They are not absorbed into the bloodstream and only relieve the topmost layer of the skin. For instance, if you live with arthritis and suffer from joint pain, applying a topical CBD product directly to the affected area may provide relief.

Transdermal products are different. They can penetrate the skin, reach the underlying muscle tissues, and get absorbed in the bloodstream. This is why transdermal creams are sold in the form of patches as their action extends beyond the region of pain. Transdermal products are expected to create a lot of buzz in 2021.

CBD Bedding

Many studies have touted CBD to have sleep-promoting qualities. Some evidence also suggests that CBD may help cure insomnia. While CBD may not directly help sleep-related conditions, it may treat the underlying causes of hindering sleep, such as anxiety and depression. Because of this, some companies are in the process of introducing CBD-infused mattresses to replace traditional bedding.

Right now, one of the biggest trending names in the CBD bedding industry is Therapedic. According to the bedding giant, CBD is an unregulated supplement, the FDA has not approved it for medicinal use; however many studies indicate that it may stimulate calmness and treat insomnia. Who wouldn’t want their mattress to have those qualities?

CBD toothpaste and mouthwash

Dental companies are also getting the best out of CBD. Many cannabidiol kinds of toothpaste and mouthwashes have become commonplace, and many people are using them to treat gingivitis, plaque, and other dental health issues.

In 2020, the Journal of Cannabis Research published research that demonstrated how CBD-infused mouthwashes helped maintain dental hygiene. Surprisingly, CBD paralleled chlorhexidine’s effectiveness and potency — one of the main ingredients in prescription mouthwashes.

Another company, AXIM Biotechnologies Inc., is also investing heavily in a new line of CBD mouthwashes. The company’s CEO, W. Huemoeller, said in an Interview for Forbes that CBD has potent anti-inflammatory and antibiotic effects, so it’s great for oral care. He added that the company had seen firsthand how useful the compound is after its CBD-based chewing gum’s success.

Harvesting CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antibiotic qualities in dental products may help combat various dental problems, such as swelling gums and bacterial growths.

CBD Research

It hasn’t been trending for long since CBD has been in the market. The compound also has a long history of being stigmatized. So, the research on it is dwindling. But, this is about to change.

After the signing of the Farm Bill 2018 in the US and the nationwide legalization in Canada, the interest in CBD research has heightened. In 2018, the FDA approved the first CBD-based oral drug to treat pediatric epilepsy called Epidiolex. Epidolex was a breakthrough treatment for two forms of epilepsy — Lennox Gastraut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome.

More research is underway, with CBD being the epicenter of chemotherapy, palliative care, Multiple Sclerosis, and a host of other serious conditions. In 2021, you can expect a wave of new CBD pharmaceuticals.

Unfortunately, for now, we don’t have any CBD-based pharmaceuticals, except. Some big pharmaceutical companies did introduce some drugs, but they never passed FDA evaluation. Most of the research has therefore been restricted to full-spectrum CBD oils, which are extracts of the whole plant. Full Spectrum CBD oils contain almost every beneficial compound of the cannabis plant, including THC, CBD, terpenes, and CBC.

Full Spectrum oils are also an ideal choice for research because of the entourage effect. The entourage effect is a mutually beneficial association between different compounds in the cannabis plant. For instance, CBD and THC may work together to cancel each other’s negative effects and promote a more streamlined cannabis experience.

Huge Search Request

The media is already on CBD’s case. But, that’s not all. There’s a significant surge in CBD awareness. Google Trends has estimated that the compound’s interest will skyrocket in the next five years. This is mainly because the curiosity surrounding new CBD products has increased. People want to try out CBD gummies, capsules, edibles, and tinctures and see what the fuss is all about. Especially, people who live with anxiety have taken special stock in cannabidiol’s medicinal value.

Final Thoughts

CBD has been called the miracle compound. But, the best part about it is its excellent safety profile. Aside from a few mild side effects, such as the dry mouth and appetite loss, it doesn’t pose any serious problems. This is not the case with THC — the main psychoactive component of cannabis— known for causing high and inducing negative psychological effects, such as hallucinations and delirium. That’s why CBD has the edge, and its popularity is expected to climb new heights in 2021.
